Friendship According to Humphrey by Betty G Birney

The blurb says:

Dear Friends,

When Og the Frog came to live in Room 26, I felt a little jealous. Still, I tried to be welcoming but I soon discovered that it’s Hard-Hard-Hard to make friends with a lumpy, bumpy frog!

Then I found out that my fellow students were having problems with their friends, too. A.J. and Garth had to deal with a bully named Mean Martin Bean. Heidi and Gail had a terrible argument, and Miranda-Golden had a new stepsister who wasn’t nice at all. Then there was the Poetry Festival, the magic show and the snowstorm! How could one small hamster solve all those problems? Luckily, I wrote the whole story in my notebook so you could share my adventures.

Your friend to the end,

A bit about the author

Betty G Birney likes to write books about a certain hamster called Humphrey …. HE IS HANDSOME! She’s been writing books since she was 7 years old – how amazing is that!? She lives in America and she writes television programmes as well as books.

What is Friendship According to Humphrey all about?

A handsome hamster called Humphrey (I wonder if he’d marry me? [blush]) gets a new class mate called Og the Frog. He’s not very sure about him but does try to make friends. He’s a bit scared that he might be replaced but after a while he realises that Og isn’t all he seems to be.

What was my favourite bit of the story?

My favourite bit is when Humphrey and Og make friends after Og saves Humphrey from a huge bag of Nutri-nibbles  (yummy)!

Was there anything I didn’t like about it?

What’s not to like – it’s about a hamster!

Would I recommend this book to girls?

Yes, especially girl hamsters (Humphrey’s really cute)

Would I recommend this book to boys?

Yes, especially boy hamsters (he’s really adventurous)

A note from my human’s grown ups:

Be warned, if you have a hamster, this book will give them tips on escaping, which as you will know, they need no help with. If you let them read anyway, watch you put padlocks on their house afterwards, you have been warned!
